First identify what is holding the screen in place. Most removable screens release by compressing a spring-loaded edge, retracting plungers, or releasing clips.
Do not lean out of an elevated window, defeat a window safety device, or force a screen that does not release normally. Keep control of the screen so it cannot fall outside.
Common removal methods
Match the method to the hardware you have.
Pull tabs + spring-loaded edge
Pull tabs are commonly placed opposite a spring-loaded edge so you can create clearance without prying the frame.
Find the pull tabs and identify the opposite edge that compresses or springs into the window frame.
Support the screen with one hand so it cannot fall outward.
Pull the tabs gently while pushing the screen toward the spring-loaded edge.
Bring the cleared tab edge inward, then release spring pressure slowly.
Slide leaf springs + pull tabs
A common Las Vegas setup uses slide leaf springs on one side and pull tabs on the opposite side.
Locate the slide leaf springs and the pull tabs before applying force.
Push the screen toward the leaf-spring side to compress the springs.
Use the pull tabs to bring the opposite edge free of the track.
Angle the freed edge inward and release the spring side slowly.
Tension springs + pull tabs
Tension springs also create a compressible edge and are often paired with tabs or another gripping point on the opposite side.
Identify the edge containing the tension springs.
Support the screen, then press it toward the spring side.
Use the opposite edge or pull tabs to clear the channel.
Tilt inward and release spring pressure gradually.
Plunger pins
Plunger-mounted screens use retractable pins that lock the screen into receiving holes or a track.
Locate every plunger pin and determine which edge it locks into.
Support the screen before retracting the pins.
Retract the plungers far enough to clear the receiving points.
Remove the released edge first, then lift the remaining edge free.
Bale clips / retaining clips
Some screens use clips that rotate, flex or release from the window frame.
Identify every clip before pulling on the screen.
Release or rotate the clips only as much as needed to free the screen edge.
Support the screen as the last retaining point is released.
Remove the screen without bending the frame or clip.
No obvious tabs or hardware
Do not pry aggressively. Some screens depend on hidden spring pressure, tracks or window-specific retention.
Inspect all four edges from inside and outside where safely accessible.
Look for a spring edge, plunger, clip, lip or channel.
If the release method is not clear, stop before forcing the frame.
Consult the window manufacturer's instructions or contact support when available.
After the screen is out
Lay it flat with the side that faces away from the house facing up.
Keep that orientation while identifying top, right, bottom and left hardware locations.
Measure width at the top and bottom corners and height along the left and right corners.
Measure the frame profile thickness and face height.
